Overview: Complete System from Supplier to Manufacturing line. Receiving XML transactions to the system, receive material against the transactions, move to Jobs out at the lines.

United Envelope was interested in beginning a large inventory management project but need to get started at an affordable cost. Accuware was willing to use a phased approach which began with receiving data transactions from their largest supplier. The Rolls of paper are shipped from the Supplier to United Envelope. Before the Paper arrives United Envelope receives an ASN transaction to their server. All receipt of goods from that supplier is received and compared to the XML data to Validate. This is a key piece to the puzzle because workers are able to rapidly receive and confirm without a lot of extra work.  This also assures that the thousands of dollars worth of paper received each day agrees with invoice received from the supplier. With this much money trading hands it is important to know that no paper has been improperly invoiced and that the paper need to perform the upcoming manufacturing orders is in place.

Receiving

Receiving screens are minimized to remove any extra navigation and input required by the workers. Paper rolls are received into a temporary holding location that comes up on the screen by default. Users scan barcodes that are already on the rolls that were printed by the supplier.  Reports are generated using the SQL server data to report inventory and compare to purchase orders in the system.  The system can also receive rolls that do not have an ASN transaction to reference. This helps with suppliers who can not comply with the label requirements. Accuware provided the site survey necessary to locate the Access points. We factored in high usage areas and obstructions to coverage presented by the building and the inventory itself.  Since the Paper rolls are so large the rolls are stacked 3 or 4 rolls high. Since there are no racks used in the raw material area..we used signs hanging down from the ceiling. Retro reflective labels were used to improve scanning distances. Symbol MC9060G scanners were outfitted with Laser scanners capable of scanning to 40 feet.

Move Materials

Move transactions were simplified to entering only 2 values. Since each roll arrives into the warehouse with a unique identification number the roll is scanned and then moved to a line. The Line becomes the new location of the item. Manufacturing execution is streamlined because management knows that the correct amount of paper of the proper type it staged in front of the 30 manufacturing lines used.  Reports are generated so that warehouse managers can direct employees to stage material properly.

Allocate Materials

Inventory accuracy can not be maintained unless product is removed from stock as well. When a job is run on a given set of manufacturing lines the users can move rolls from the rear of the lines and place them on a machine to create envelopes. The user scans the roll and scans the Barcode at the line. The roll in removed from inventory and allocated to the job. Real data about Job costing can now be calculated to guide United Envelope in learning which customers orders are profitable and which are not. Key metrics towards financial success. RF coverage near the many lines needed to be thorough. Accuware recommended WIFI Plus specialized Antennas. These improved antenna technologies allow signals that are distorted or reflected  by obstructions to still be used by the access point. Often the strongest signal is the one that is a reflected signal.  Between large machines in a large plant we need coverage to ensure reliable connection to the software.  Unitech PA963’s were used as rugged yet relatively low cost units for the users at the lines. Since the software runs in a browser, the units were preconfigured by Accuware to boot to our application. Users can not access other applications.
